If you often wake up with jaw pain, headaches, or if you find yourself clenching or grinding your teeth, you may have a common condition called bruxism.
This teeth grinding can be due to stressful situations, problems in sleeping, an abnormal bite, and crooked or missing teeth. Many people do not even know that they grind their teeth, as it often occurs when one is sleeping. If not corrected, bruxism can lead to broken teeth, cracked teeth, damaged restorations, or even tooth loss.
There is an easy, non-invasive treatment for bruxism: nightguards. Nightguards are an easy way to prevent the wear and damage that teeth-grinding cause over time. Custom-made by your dentist from soft material to fit your teeth, a nightguard is inserted over your top or bottom arch and prevents contact with the opposing teeth.
Choosing the right mouthguard is essential. There are two basic types of mouthguards: the pre-made nightguard, and a custom-made nightguard from our office. When you choose a nightguard, be sure to pick one that is tear-resistant, comfortable and well fitted for your mouth, easy to keep clean, and does not prevent you from breathing properly. A nightguard created in our office will fit all these requirements, as it will be custom-made just for your teeth.
If you have been recommended a nightguard, it’s because signs of damage have been seen on your teeth, gums, muscles or jaws. Often, this clenching and grinding happens when you are asleep so you don’t have control over it. This is why nightguards are so important in protecting you against this subconscious habit. Not wearing a nightguard when it’s needed can cause:
Treatments for the issues that can arise due to grinding your teeth are often expensive. Taking a preventative approach and wearing a nightguard to avoid the need for extensive dental treatment in the future is a worthwhile investment.
A nightguard is often covered by many dental insurance plans and it will also prevent you from spending far more later to fix damaged and painful teeth. Especially if you’ve had any cosmetic dentistry done, such as dental veneers, you want to make sure you protect your investment. Our experienced Team at Venus Dental is happy to contact your insurance to find out your coverage for you.
Getting fitted for your custom nightguard is a simple and fast process. During your next visit, we’ll get a 3D mold of your teeth using our iTero Digital Scanner. Then we send it out to the lab that will make the guard personalized to your teeth. While one-size-fits-all nightguards can be slightly tweaked to fit your mouth, a custom-fit nightguard is the best solution, as it will ensure every tooth is fully cushioned. You’ll return in a few days to try the guard on and make sure it fits comfortably then we’ll send you home for a much better sleep!
